The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is the longest continuous ride in New Zealand and takes in some of the country's most incredible scenery. From New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook, the trail descends over 2000ft and travels 300km to the coastal town of Oamaru. This trail showcases New Zealand's geological, geographical and historical highlights from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean.

Awakino Ski Field

Awakino Ski Field

The Awakino Ski Field is a friendly and affordable club-operated ski field situated high in the St Marys Range near Kurow in the Waitaki Valley. The field is situated in a sunny, north-facing valley with fantastic views over the Waitaki Valley and Hakataramea. It boasts one-and-a-half high-speed rope tows, queues are unheard of and a busy day means more than 10 persons.

Kurow Museum

Kurow Museum

The first people to settle in the Waitaki Valley were the Waitaha who used a reed 'boat' called a mokihi to navigate the wild Waitaki River. Call in to Kurow Museum to see the replica mokihi made by the late Rangi Te Maiharoa – a descendant of the Waitaha.

Vanished World Duntroon

Vanished World Duntroon

North Otago and the larger surrounding Waitaki District have been renowned for striking and informative features for more than 150 years. The Vanished World Centre at Duntroon is the heart of the Vanished World Trail, with displays that help explain and interpret the fossils, rocks, localities and landforms along the trail. Visitors wishing to participate in the fossil heritage of the Waitaki are able to gain a greater appreciation of the unique nature of the area by viewing these displays.

Kirkliston Range Conservation Area

Kirkliston Range Conservation Area

The Kirkliston Range Conservation Area, in the Waitaki Valley, is a regionally significant landscape, particularly notable for its vegetation, which includes healthy and regenerating snow tussocklands and alpine scree vegetation. The area is habitat for a number of notable bird species including pipit, paradise duck, black shag and the South Island pied oystercatcher.
